Nothing like a night of watching religions argue over “truth”…

Cognitive dissonance is beautiful.

On Saturday, July 11, some of us from UB Freethinkers, along with our friends from the Center For Inquiry (to include interns Derek Rogers of Dalhousie Univ. and Adam Isaak of Minnesota State University Moorehead) and a gaggle of others from RIT Skeptics and Stony Brook University Freethinkers, all took a trip to Palmyra, NY to see the annual Mormon Hill Cumorah Pageant.  The play, which tells the story of how Mormonism was founded, is one of the largest outdoor stage productions in North America.

Now, Mormons are known for some pretty wacky beliefs, and we were hoping for quite the show.  But the real fun resided in the various Christian groups who came out to demonstrate and protest against the “false” religion of Mormonism, which they claim simply hijacks Jesus Christ and other features of Christianity.  As you might expect, they made their presence well known…

The girl on the right is holding a sign that says, “Ask me why you deserve HELL!”  Ahh, Christian love.

Anyhow, the show was quite the sight, but was rained out half-way through, so we weren’t able to see exactly how Mormonism was founded.  I suppose the South Park review of the story will have to do.

More photos and video below the fold.

This fellow said he hadn’t investigated Mormonism himself, but he knew friends who had, and we “definitely didn’t want to get involved in that trash.  They’re just…crazy stuff in there.”

They even had a truck to drive back and forth in front of the venue…

“As me why you deserve HELL!”  With flames and all…lovely.
